About ALS

ALS is a rapidly progressive, neuromuscular disease that attacks the motor neurons in the brain that send messages to voluntary muscles (like those in the legs, arms throat and upper chest). Without this communication the muscles fail to activate, lose strength and die, making simple movements difficult.

ALS patients often stumble and fall in the early stages of the disease and simple daily activities become increasingly difficult, making it necessary for support from a caregiver. Swallowing may also become difficult or impossible and patients will eventually need a special diet or tube feeding. In addition, while many ALS patients remain cognitive, their speech may become slurred, which makes communication and socializing difficult.

The average life expectancy following a diagnosis is 3-5 years. During this time the progression of the disease takes a toll on the patient, designated caregivers and their families as they struggle to cope with the day-to-day challenges.
